Crown Lengthening Q&A
What is aesthetic crown lengthening?
Aesthetic crown lengthening is a cosmetic procedure that removes excess gum tissue to reveal the full length of your teeth. If you show too much of your gums when you smile or if your teeth appear shorter than usual, this routine procedure can transform the aesthetic appearance of your smile.
What happens during aesthetic crown lengthening?
Dr. Ruprecht evaluates your gum and bone tissue to determine the most appropriate plan then creates a wax-up model with the most natural tooth shape for your unique smile. Once you have viewed the initial mock-up, she will modify it with you to reach the ideal design with your full approval.
Dr. Ruprecht then creates a surgery template based on the completed design. During surgery, she will carefully shape the gum tissue following the contours of the template.
In cases where bone tissue covers the teeth, Dr. Ruprecht incorporates bone contouring into the procedure to obtain healthy and lasting results, using a Gemini™ diode laser to refine the gingival contours. In cases where minimal gingival sculpting is needed, she will use a laser for the full procedure. Dr. Ruprecht places sutures when bone recontouring is needed.
What is the recovery process like after aesthetic crown lengthening?
Even though aesthetic crown lengthening is an outpatient procedure, it is important to rest and follow directions during your recovery period. You will be given complete instructions for post-operative care that typically include rest, a limited diet, oral hygiene and limited activities for a few days.
Dr. Ruprecht will prescribe pain medication, natural healing supplements and antibiotics as needed. In addition to remaining in contact with you following surgery, she will schedule one or more follow-up visits to monitor your healing and guide the next steps in your treatment plan.
